If you answer yes to any of the questions above, then your windows registry is probably corrupted.  The solution therefore will be to clean the registry.  Before we show you how to clean the registry first we need to answer two questions:

What is a windows registry?
How does the windows registry get corrupted?

What is a Windows Registry?

Windows Registry stores information about configuration settings and options on windows operating systems.  The Registry contains information that the windows operating system continually refer to when required to perform a particular task.  The registry contains information such as user profiles, applications installed on the system and what documents each of the applications can create, what hardware exists on the system, and the ports that are required.   In other words Windows utilizes a registry to keep links to all the information on your computer. When a program needs to access information, it goes to the registry to figure out where it is on the computer.

In simple terms the Windows registry is that part of the brain of the computer where all essential program operation information is stored.  All the data that controls your hardware, operating system, programs and user preferences and so on are all stored here.  From the fore going you can see that information can be added to or removed from the registry.  Typical example will be when you install or un-install a program on your computer.  Whenever you install or uninstall a program the information will be directly reflected on your windows registry and stored.  Therefore every request made of the computer will involve active participation of the Windows Registry.

How does the windows registry get corrupted?

As discussed above the computer refers to data held in the registry in order to perform a specific task. As you use your computer new files and data are continuously added the registry. I mentioned above that information kept being added to the registry as well as some being taken off.  Typically when programs are un-installed remnants are left behind.  This adds to the redundant data in the registry.  So the registry grows and grows to the point that it becomes congested.  This constant change and growth eventually slows down the computer.    When this happens the registry needs to be cleaned.  This brings us to the point we made at the beginning of this article about cleaning the registry. Therefore the final point to be addressed here is how to clean the computer registry.

How do you clean the windows registry?

A lot of people do not realise that you can clean the windows registry manually.  It means you have to “dive” into the registry to clean it manually.  You need the skills to do this.  But, even people with the knowledge and skills to clean the registry manually avoid doing it manually.  Doing it manually can be a tedious, difficult and time consuming process.  There is also a danger of damaging your system by accidentally deleting important files from the system.

The best option is to use a registry cleaning software, simply called registry cleaners.  There are different kinds registry cleaners.  Some are free, some you have to pay for them.  As with everything else you get what you pay for so don’t expect too much of the free registry cleaners.  Even among the paid ones some work better than others so you have to choose carefully.  The good news is that registry cleaners are not very expensive if you compare the price with purchasing a new computer for or using a technician to fix your computer for you.

We reviewed a number registry cleaners on this site and ranked them on the basis of ability to do the job and popularity of the product.  Our top rated registry cleaner is Regcure, featured at the top of this page. If you are having any of the problems mentioned at the beginning of this article you can scan your computer now and go on to fix your computer.
